Briefing on achieving vision zero

The problem

There were 132 people killed on London’s roads in 2013, of which half were pedestrians. There were, too, more than 2,000 serious injuries. While the casualty figures on the roads have been reducing over the years, in absolute terms the number of deaths is still far too high and there is still a casual acceptance that this is the price that must be paid for Londoners’ mobility. That is not the case. As examples from other countries have shown, treating the road casualties as a serious public health issue can lead to dramatic improvements in road safety. A radical new approach to the issue is required.

A people-centred transport policy can end needless deaths and injuries

The figures released today by the Stop Killing Cyclists campaign highlight the urgent need to make London’s roads safer for all. They show that most boroughs have failed to introduce any segregated cycle lanes and few have plans to do so. Given the high death toll of cyclists and the increase in numbers, this shows a lack of concern about a key proportion of road users.

London needs its own minimum wage level – a response to the Resolution Foundation report

The Wolmarforlondon campaign welcomes the report by the Resolution Foundation calling for radical improvements to the minimum wage.

Boosting low pay is not just beneficial to those directly affected. The increased income for these low earners is likely to be spent on local businesses and services which helps the stability and prosperity of communities. Increasing the minimum wage and encouraging employers to pay the living wage consequently would be good for London as a whole. Moreover, it would reduce the benefits bill since people on low pay often have to claim benefits to ensure they can provide even the basics for themselves.
