christian wolmar commented on Why Boris airport will never happen 2014-09-02 07:11:28 +0100See my Press Release posted last night and pasted below. I’ve always favoured Gatwick, if need can be demonstrated.
: ‘Thames Estuary: we need to sort reality from fantasy’ says mayoral candidate Christian Wolmar. London can have two hub air-ports if case can be made for new Gatwick runway.
Gatwick is the only viable and sensible choice for a new runway for London, says mayoral candidate Christian Wolmar. He argues that there is no reason why London should not have two hub airports and the environmental damage from a second runway at Gatwick is far less than having a third runway at Heathrow or an airport in the Thames Estuary.
Referring to the plan for a potential Thames Estuary airport promoted by mayor Boris Johnson, he said: ‘The idea for an airport in the estuary has always been a non-runner for both environmental and practical reasons. It is now time for Sir Howard Davies to lay it to rest permanently.’ However, he added: ‘A new airport anywhere will cause damage and therefore we must be assured that there is a genuine need before any scheme is given the go ahead’.
If the case for a new runway for London can be proved, which is by no means definite, the only viable solution would appear to be Gatwick where the planning rules banning construction of a second runway run out in 2019. While Johnson objects to the idea on the notion that it would not be a hub, there is no reason why London cannot have two hub airports, as is the case with New York.
