We have recently advertised for a wolmarforlondon campaign volunteer. You can find the advert at http://www.w4mpjobs.org/JobDetails.aspx?jobid=44072 and we’ve also posted it on Twitter. This has caused some debate about the use of volunteer labour for campaigns such as wolmarforlondon.
We have considered this role in great detail and are committed to ensuring that it is an experience that can be as useful as possible for any volunteer. We will work hard to provide a useful, beneficial and exciting opportunity – and will be very receptive to any volunteer’s feedback.
The advert does not feature an exhaustive list of duties. We are keen to attract anyone who wants to get involved in the campaign – using their own experience, skills and knowledge to help make London a better place to live. In return, we will work to make any volunteer’s time on the campaign as useful to them as possible. We are hoping to find someone to work closely with me, in a supportive and structured learning environment, and we will ensure that they get significant exposure to all elements of building a successful campaign. We will use the campaign network, and my network, to support the volunteer in building and developing their career.
Similarly, we recognise that only a few individuals are able to work full-time for expenses only. We therefore have no set commitment or timeframe, but want volunteers to stay with us for as long as is practicable for them. We will work hard to keep them, including helping them to fit their support of wolmarforlondon around their own commitments. We’ve looked at a range of resources when scoping this role – including IVO.org and Volunteering.org.uk to ensure that we can be as supportive and helpful as possible to any volunteer.
We don’t think that there is anything unusual or wrong about seeking more help than can be provided by the current team. This is not like Simon Cowell using free labour. The campaign is seeking to broaden out in order to be in a position to compete with the established politicians when they finally decide to enter the fray.
